Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Story: 4 Stars. Sci-Fi is not my first choice of genre, <<Error>> so the fact that I read this book and enjoyed it should tell you something. (Hint: GO BUY THIS BOOK!) I originally passed on the opportunity to read it <<Error>> but then Andye from Reading Teen convinced me (over french fries) that I NEEDED this book in my life. Mainly, because kissing.

Sidenote: We have a thing for kissing in YA. Basically, #wewantmorekissing! For more info on the reasoning behind #wewantmorekissing, go here.

But really, this book and the story, and the characters are awesome!

Especially Ezra Mason, I love a good smartasstic boy! (I may have just made that word, smart ass + sarcastic = smartasstic, up.) Ezra's funny, witty, and romantic, even if Kady doesn't see him that way in the beginning. <<Error>> She'll come around. <<Error>> Eventually. <<Error>> Maybe. Assuming they both survive and all. <<Error>>

Kady is a tough nut to crack. She doesn't put up with any bulls--<<Error>>, and she took a while to grow on me, even with that pink hair of hers. What I liked most about her was her bravery and her intelligence.

And then there is AIDAN, the AI. Super computer extraordinaire! <<Error>> And possible enemy of every human still alive. <<Error>> Maybe. You'll have to read the book to find out.

This story is full of plot twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat and few that made me choke up. The ending felt a little rushed, BUT is also left me wanting more. More Ezra. More Kady. More AI. More kissing. MORE ILLUMINAE!

Audio: THIS WILL RUIN YOU FOR ALL OTHER AUDIOBOOKS! Seriously, I don't know how I'm supposed to listen to another audiobook without this cast. They were fanfreakingtastic, each one bringing the characters to life in their own unique way. At times, I felt like I was watching a movie with my eyes closed. So, if audiobooks are your jam, BUY THIS ONE.

***I have a few predictions about book 2. WARNING. They are spoilery. So, you know, don't look at me <<Error>> them if you haven't read the book yet.***
