Making friends has never been Elise Dembowski’s strong suit. All throughout her life, she’s been the butt of every joke and the outsider in every conversation. When a final attempt at popularity fails, Elise nearly gives up. Then she stumbles upon a warehouse party where she meets Vicky, a girl in a band who accepts her; Char, a cute, yet mysterious disc jockey; Pippa, a carefree spirit from England; and most importantly, a love for DJing.

Told in a refreshingly genuine and laugh-out-loud funny voice, This Song Will Save Your Life is an exuberant novel about identity, friendship, and the power of music to bring people together.

~ My Thoughts ~

I loved the characters, loved the setting and most of all, I LOVED THE MUSIC!

This Song Will Save Your Life hit a little too close to home at times, and not because I moonlight as a DJ at the hottest underground dance party, although my cupcake business could be a good cover for that...but because I understood (from personal experience) the decision Elise makes in the beginning of the book. I *got* her pain and loneliness in so many ways. But this is ultimately a hope-filled story about family, friendship and figuring out who you are and what you're worth.

STARS by Switchfoot

I still struggle with what I call "black cloud days". When my responsibilites and life overwhelm me, and I feel partly cloudy with a chance of rain and I want nothing more than to build a blanket fort and hide. Forever. Or at least until the feeling goes away.
Something always comes along though, to remind me that I'm not alone. Like this song. The chorus goes...

"Everyone, everyone you look so lonely. But when I look at the stars, when I look at the stars. When I look at the stars, I see someone else. When I look at the stars, the stars, l feel like myself."

~ Author Interview ~

Who was your favorite character to write and why?
Elise. She’s my heroine. I get her. She doesn’t always do the right thing, but I understand where she’s coming from.

Who was the most difficult?
I don’t think there’s one character who’s particularly difficult. Maybe some of the grown-ups? I’m just less interested in writing their voices than I am in writing the teens.

Of all of the songs on the playlist, which song best describes Elise?
Well, I named her after the Cure song “A Letter to Elise,” so maybe that one. Or “Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying,” by Belle & Sebastian—a classic!

The best piece of writing advice you've been given...
Every scene in your book should either provide new information about the characters and their relationships, or it should move the plot forward. If it’s not achieving either of those aims, then delete it. (This was advice from my editor. She knows what she’s doing.)

I ask all of my blog guests this one, brownies, cupcakes or pie?
Brownies! The more chocolate the better, at all times, period.
