When having two powers makes you a Super and having none makes you a Normal, having only one makes you a sad half-superpowered freak.

It makes you a One.

Sixteen-year-old Merrin Grey would love to be able to fly – too bad all she can do is hover.

If she could just land an internship at the Biotech Hub, she might finally figure out how to fix herself. She busts her butt in AP Chem and salivates over the Hub’s research on the manifestation of superpowers, all in hopes of boosting her chances.

Then she meets Elias VanDyne, another One, and all her carefully crafted plans fly out the window. Literally. When the two of them touch, their Ones combine to make them fly, and when they’re not soaring over the Nebraska cornfields, they’re busy falling for each other.

Merrin's mad chemistry skills land her a spot on the Hub's internship short list, but as she gets closer to the life she always wanted, she discovers that the Hub’s purpose is more sinister than it has always seemed. Now it’s up to her to decide if it's more important to fly solo, or to save everything - and everyone - she loves.

My Thoughts

Thank you Leigh Ann Kopans for this ARC!

This debut is an enticing Sci-Fi/Dystopian mashup that fans of the Avengers and X-Men will no doubt, enjoy. Filled with action, suspense, romance and swoon, ONE brings to light the superhero potential we all have inside of us - that is, if we can just get past our short-comings first.

I enjoyed Merrin's character because she's smart, strong and can play the drums like a boss. She posses an inner strength that rivals the physical strength of Superman and she doesn't back down from a challenge.

Elias, Merrin's love interest, was a breath of fresh air as far as book boys go! They share a lot in common and the relationship that develops was sweet but still had plenty of romantic tension. The supporting characters were entertaining and the book ends in a way that will leave readers sated yet looking forward to where the story leads next.

About the Author
Raised on comic books and classic novels, Leigh Ann developed an early love of science fiction and literature.  As an adult, she rediscovered her love for not only reading, but also writing the types of fiction that enchanted her as a teen.
Her debut novel, ONE, is about a girl with only half a superpower, the boy who makes her fly, and her struggle to make herself whole.

Leigh Ann, her husband, and four children live in Columbus, Ohio. When she’s not immersed in the world of fiction, you can find her obsessing over the latest superhero movie or using her kids as an excuse to go out for ice cream (again.)

Leigh Ann's debut novel, ONE, will be published on June 11, 2013, and its sequel, TWO, on October 8, 2013.

Interview

1) What is one place you'd like to visit before you die?
Oooh, that's a great question! I've been to Paris, and to Israel...and I'm really a homebody. But I've never been to Asia or South America, and I think both those places would be really fun to visit.

2) What song is currently stuck in your head? (This can be a favorite or one you loathe.) "Wake Up" by Arcade Fire. It's an earbug, but one that I love for sure.

3) I know you're a Mom to four young children, so how do you balance writing with LIFE?
Oh, gosh. I don't. I don't sleep or exercise nearly enough, I hardly ever cook, all our clothes are wrinkled, and my house is a disaster. But my kids have what they really need, and they know I love them. Most importantly, I'm not resentful of them because I made the choice to write instead of scrub the toilets twice a week or fold their clothes perfectly. I have to hope that's enough.

4) If ONE were a movie, who would be your dream Merrin? Elias?
I have no idea! They don't look like any actress and actor I've been able to find, for better or for worse.

5) If you could have dessert with any book character, who would it be and what would you eat? (You get bonus points for saying cupcakes, jsyk.)
Ah, I like cupcakes, but my favorite dessert ever is a macaron ice cream sandwich from a local place called Jeni's. It's heaven. And a book character....there are so many, but I think it goes back to my first ever fictional bestie - Meg Murry from A Wrinkle in Time. I love that girl, and I think we have a lot in common, both back when I first met her at eight years old and now. :)

Thank you so, so much for having me! This has been wonderful!

  2. I am looking forward to this one, because even though I don't read as much of it as I used to, I ADORE science fiction (and fantasy.) I'm a sucker for anything where the characters have superpowers. It's awesome you liked the MC so much. :)
